Louisville Wedding & Portrait Photographer

Timeless, authentic photography for couples, families, brands & events throughout Kentucky.

One of the most common questions I get after a couple books their engagement session is what they should wear. And I totally understand why.

Your engagement photos are such a special part of this season, and it’s easy to put pressure on yourself to find the perfect outfit. The good news is that it doesn’t have to be complicated. Most of the time, the outfits that photograph best are the ones that feel comfortable, natural, and most like you.

My Go-To Recommendation: Neutrals

If a couple asks me where to start, I almost always suggest leaning toward neutral colors.

Creams, whites, tans, soft blues, muted greens, and earthy tones tend to photograph beautifully in just about any setting. They don’t compete with the scenery, and they help keep the focus on what really matters: the two of you.

I’ve found that neutral tones also tend to feel more timeless. Years from now, when you’re looking back through your gallery, you’ll still love how clean and classic everything feels.

A Quick Note About Patterns & Bright Colors

This doesn’t mean you have to avoid color altogether. Your engagement session should still feel like you.

That said, I usually encourage couples to be mindful of really bright colors, large logos, or busy patterns. Sometimes those things can become the first thing your eye notices in a photo instead of the people in it.

If there’s a certain look or vibe you’re hoping to create, though, we can absolutely lean into that. Every couple is different, and that’s part of what makes engagement sessions so much fun.

Why I Love When Brides Wear White

This might just be one of my favorite engagement session details. I always think it’s so sweet when the bride-to-be wears white.

It doesn’t have to be anything formal or over-the-top. Sometimes it’s a simple dress, sometimes it’s a sweater, and sometimes it’s just one of the outfits they bring for part of the session.

There’s just something special about it. It feels like a little nod to the wedding day that’s coming, and it photographs beautifully every single time.

Bring Something That’s Meaningful to You

One thing I absolutely love is when couples bring a small piece of their story into the session.

I’ve seen handwritten letters, mirrors with wedding dates written on them, letter boards with meaningful messages, balloons, favorite books, and all kinds of creative ideas.

I’ve had couples bring their dogs, couples that have had their horses on the property & even sessions on family farms that held years of memories long before the engagement session ever happened.

The common thread isn’t the prop itself, it’s normally that it means something to the couple. So, if there’s something that feels like part of your story, don’t be afraid to bring it along. Those personal touches often end up being some of my favorite images from the entire gallery.

And Of Course… The Ring

Before you head out the door, make sure you don’t forget the engagement ring! I always love capturing a few ring shots throughout the session. Sometimes they’re detailed close-ups and other times they’re woven naturally into moments between the two of you.

Either way, it’s such a special part of this season and definitely deserves a little time in front of the camera.

At the End of the Day

There isn’t one perfect outfit for engagement photos. The best outfit is the one that makes you feel comfortable and excited to spend an evening celebrating this season together.

If you’re ever stuck between options, send them my way! I genuinely love helping couples put outfits together, and sometimes a second opinion makes the decision a whole lot easier.

Your engagement session shouldn’t feel stressful. It should feel like a date night with a third wheel carrying a camera. Talk soon!
