The 4 Best Lexington, KY Engagement Photo Locations (Photographer’s Guide)

Even though I’m based in Louisville, I actually find myself in Lexington just as much, if not more. It’s been such a blessing getting to know couples outside of my normal area. I truly believe every new couple I get to meet is an opportunity brought by the Lord, and part of that has been getting to explore so many beautiful locations around Lexington.

If you’re planning your engagement session and aren’t sure where to go, here are a few of my favorite spots.

The Square

Stunning. Sun-soaked. Modern. Honestly, this place has everything.

Okay, so technically I haven’t photographed an engagement session here… yet. We came here for bridal party portraits during a wedding, but regardless, you get the idea.

Between the lamp posts, tiled sidewalks, brick buildings, and beautiful architecture, this location gives you a little bit of everything. It’s perfect for couples who want an urban feel without losing all of the charm.

If you’re looking for something a little dressier than an open field, this is one of my top recommendations.

Bonus points because it’s completely free. You’ll have to pay for parking nearby, but the few dollars are absolutely worth the endless photo opportunities.

UK Arboretum

Planning a spring or early fall session? If you’re a nature-loving couple, this might be the perfect spot.

The UK Arboretum is home to hundreds of different trees, flowers, and plant species, so every direction you turn feels like a new backdrop. This is one of those locations where your engagement session feels more like a date than a photoshoot.

My favorite time to photograph here is just before sunset, when the light filters through the trees and everything gets that soft, glowy look.

The Arboretum does require a $27 photography permit, and sessions have to be scheduled with them ahead of time. Don’t worry though. If you decide this is the location for you, I’ll help walk you through that process.

The Club at UK’s Spindletop Hall

If you’re dreaming of a location that feels straight out of a movie, this is it.

The Club at UK’s Spindletop Hall has become one of my favorite places to photograph couples because every direction you look feels elegant. Between the grand white mansion, sweeping staircases, perfectly manicured gardens, and towering trees, it has a timeless charm that’s hard to find anywhere else.

One of my favorite things about Spindletop is how versatile it is. You can dress up in a formal outfit and create something that feels incredibly luxurious, or keep things casual and still end up with beautiful, romantic images.

Golden hour here is absolutely unreal. The light wraps around the building and gardens so beautifully, giving your photos that soft, dreamy look everyone loves.

If you’re wanting engagement photos that feel classy, romantic, and a little bit like a European estate without leaving Kentucky, this location should definitely be on your list.

Kentucky Horse Park

You can’t talk about Lexington without talking about horses.

If you’re wanting your photos to feel timeless and unmistakably Kentucky, the Horse Park is hard to beat. Rolling white fences, gorgeous pastures, historic barns, and miles of beautiful scenery make this one of the most unique engagement session locations around.

One of my favorite things about the Horse Park is how much variety you can get without ever feeling like you’re walking miles between spots. In one session, we can capture wide-open landscapes, elegant fence lines, tree-lined paths, and classic Kentucky views that never go out of style.

It’s especially beautiful in the evening when the golden light hits the fields.

There is an admission fee to enter the park, but if you’re dreaming of that iconic Kentucky look, it’s absolutely worth it.

Which One Should You Choose?

Each of these locations has its own personality, which is why I love them.

  • The Square is perfect if you’re after a modern, downtown vibe.
  • UK Arboretum is ideal for couples who love nature and want their session to feel relaxed.
  • Kentucky Horse Park gives you those iconic Kentucky views with rolling fields and white fences.
  • The Club at UK’s Spindletop Hall is my recommendation if you’re dreaming of something timeless, elegant, and romantic.

At the end of the day, the “best” location is the one that feels the most like you. My goal isn’t just to take pretty pictures. It’s to create an experience that reflects your relationship and leaves you with photos you’ll still love decades from now.

If you’re recently engaged and trying to decide where to have your session, I’d love to help! Reach out, tell me your vision, and together we’ll find the perfect location for your engagement photos.
