How Many Hours of Wedding Photography Do You Really Need?

The most common question I get from couples after they inquire is: “How many hours of wedding photography do we actually need?”

It truly depends on what parts of your wedding day matter most to you. More hours isn’t always the best answer, and I never want couples paying for coverage they won’t actually use. My goal is to help you choose the package that fits your day, not to upsell you into the biggest collection.

Here’s a breakdown of what you can typically expect from each option.

4 Hours: Perfect for Intimate Weddings & Budget-Conscious Couples

If you’re planning a smaller celebration or simply care most about documenting the ceremony and portraits, four hours can be a fantastic option.

This package is ideal for couples who want coverage of:

  • The ceremony
  • Family photos
  • Wedding party portraits
  • Couple portraits
  • Grand entrance
  • First dance

Because the coverage is shorter, we have to be intentional with the timeline. There’s usually little room for getting ready photos or extended reception coverage, but if your priorities are the moments surrounding your ceremony, this package can be exactly what you need.

Best for:

  • Small weddings
  • Budget-conscious couples
  • Couples skipping getting ready photos
  • Celebrations with shorter receptions

6 Hours: The Sweet Spot for Simpler Wedding Days

Six hours is a great middle ground and one of my most popular options.

This usually gives us enough time for:

  • Some getting ready photos
  • Details (dress, rings, invitations, florals)
  • Ceremony
  • Family portraits
  • Wedding party portraits
  • Couple portraits
  • Reception through most of the major events, often including cake cutting

The biggest thing to know about six-hour coverage is that your timeline may need to move a little more efficiently. If you’re traveling between getting ready locations, your ceremony, and your reception, or if your ceremony is longer, we’ll likely have less flexibility throughout the day.

That doesn’t mean it won’t work. It just means we’ll build a thoughtful timeline together to make the most of every minute.

Best for:

  • Traditional weddings
  • Couples who want some getting ready coverage
  • Weddings with a streamlined timeline

8 Hours: My Most Recommended Option

If you’re not sure what you need, this is usually where I point couples first. Eight hours gives us room to breathe. Instead of feeling rushed from one event to the next, we have time to document your day naturally.

Typical coverage includes:

  • Getting ready
  • Detail photographs
  • First look (if you’re doing one)
  • Ceremony
  • Family portraits
  • Wedding party portraits
  • Plenty of couple portraits
  • Reception events
  • Dancing
  • Sometimes even your send-off, depending on the timeline

The extra time creates flexibility if hair and makeup run behind, family photos take a little longer than expected, or you simply want to spend more time enjoying your day instead of watching the clock. For most full wedding days, this ends up being the perfect fit.

Best for:

  • Most traditional weddings
  • Couples wanting a relaxed timeline
  • Weddings with multiple locations
  • Couples who don’t want to feel rushed

What About 10 or 12 Hours?

Some wedding days absolutely benefit from longer coverage, but not as many as you might think. I typically recommend 10 or more hours when you want:

  • Full getting ready coverage beginning early in the day
  • Multiple getting ready locations
  • A longer ceremony
  • Travel between several venues
  • A full reception
  • An end-of-night exit like sparklers, bubbles, or confetti

For many couples, though, an organized eight-hour timeline covers everything that’s important. That’s why I never automatically recommend longer collections unless your wedding day truly calls for them.

The Biggest Factors That Affect Your Timeline

The amount of coverage you need isn’t just about guest count. Here are a few things that can change your photography timeline:

  • Whether you’re doing a first look
  • Travel time between locations
  • Ceremony length
  • Number of family photo combinations
  • Reception traditions you want photographed
  • Whether you’re planning an exit

Every wedding is different, which is why I help every couple build a timeline that’s customized to their day.

Still Not Sure?

Don’t worry! Once you tell me about your wedding plans, I’ll recommend the amount of coverage that actually makes sense for your day.

My goal is never to sell you more hours than you need. It’s simply to make sure the moments that matter most are beautifully documented, while helping you stay within your budget.

If you’re planning a wedding in Louisville, Lexington, Southern Indiana, or anywhere across Kentucky, I’d love to help you create a photography timeline that feels relaxed and allows you to enjoy every moment of your day.
